How cured-in-place lining works

With cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining, a flexible liner soaked in resin is pulled or inverted into the old pipe through an access point, then cured so it hardens into a new pipe inside the old one. The result has no joints for roots to get through. Because the work happens through access points, there is much less digging than traditional replacement.

When lining is not the answer

Lining needs a pipe that still holds its shape. A fully collapsed section, a severe belly where the pipe has sunk, or a line that is too small may need a spot excavation or another method, such as pipe bursting. A contractor should show you the footage and explain why they are recommending one method over another.

Getting a sound decision

Start with a camera inspection. If the pipe is cast iron, it may need descaling first. Ask the contractor what warranty they provide on the liner; warranties are set by the contractor, not by this website.

Will lining make my pipe smaller?

Can every pipe be lined?
